Poinsettia

One of the most well known plants and symbols of the Christmas holidays is the poinsettia. These plants both in red and white make wonderful table setting and home decorations. Whether woven nicely into a wreath or simply stationary in their pots, the poinsettia look gorgeous and add a sense of color and decorum to the Christmas season.

The Poinsettia plant is native to the southwest regions of the United States, Mexico and some form have been found as far south as Guatemala. The plant is said to be named after Joel Roberts Poinset who was the first US ambassador to Mexico. He claims the discovery through his many journeys south of the border.

Poinsettias seem to be in abundance during the Christmas holiday season however soon after they all seem to pull a disappearing act. Ever wonder why? The reason being is that poinsettias are rather touchy about their temperature and growing conditions.

Poinsettias are very fussy about temperature. These plants are sub tropical so any temperature below 50 Fahrenheit will kill it. However, if the mercury gets too high or over 70 Fahrenheit, this will shorten its life. It is possible to keep these plants indoor in areas of extreme weather but they need a fair amount of attention.

Many fail to realize that when poinsettias are bought, this is the end of their season. Most are bought when they are flowering; after they flower they go into a dormant phase. During this dormant phase they need several days in a row of darkness in order to reflowed again. Even light from light bulbs can hamper the flowering process.

Poinsettias also have strict watering instructions. Pouring water directly on the roots can be very bad for these plants. Instead they prefer a constant state of dampness. Direct water can flood the roots causing the plant to drown.

Poinsettias are very beautiful around Christmas time. However soon after it seems the thrill is gone. It is possible to keep poinsettias throughout the year; however some serious care is required.
