Christmas Plants
When many of us think of Christmas, several different images come to mind. For young children pictures of Santa, presents, reindeer and candy canes top the list. For those of us that are older, Christmas trees, decorations and endless wrapping of gifts comes to mind. Christmas plants are also another symbol.
One of the most popular Christmas plants is of course the Christmas tree. Nearly every country in the western world keeps this tradition alive every year. Many of us still get natural tress while others in the warmer climates go with the artificial version. Which ever way one chooses, the Christmas tree is one of the most popular Christmas plants and it looks as if it is here to stay.
Another type of Christmas plant is the Pointsetta. This plant was discovered by a Man named Joel Roberts Poinsettia. He was the first US minister to Mexico and the plant was soon named after him. The plant was discovered in 1828 and soon became synonymous with Christmas time.
Another Christmas plant that seems to have quite a history is the mistletoe. Often used at today’s Christmas parties to get kisses off of people you wouldn’t ordinarily ask, this plant has been associated with magical and mystical properties. Ancient peoples thought this Christmas plant was special because of its ability to bear frit in the winter months. The ancient Celtic tribes thought it could heal diseases and make poisons harmless from spirits or witches. English farmers would also feed mistletoe to the first cow that gave birth in the season. This was believed to bring good luck and fortune to the rest of the herd.
Finally, the Christmas cactus is another plant that has been becoming more popular. This is likely because it is able to be kept throughout the year. Christmas cactuses are native to South America but can adapt quite nicely to the climates of the north. They look similar to holly with lighter leaves and berries. They offer a colorful alternative to the more traditional Christmas plants.
Christmas plants are another dimension of Christmas decorations. Some have a long standing history with several myths attached while others offer something new. For those that love the greenery Christmas plants make a wonderful way to decorate.
